Obsolete Replacement
News & Events
Many companies continue to develop 1553 boards that relay on old parts, which are discontinued.
These companies have two options:
- Re-design the board and software to some new part, which may be obsolete in a few years.
- Create a new part, using FPGA and IP cores with appropriate interfaces, to match the old design and be able to use the same hardware and software.
In most cases, option 2 is the fastest and cheapest way.
Sital Technology have a lot of experience in designing obsolete replacements, utilizing its Mil-Std-1553 IP core and building a specially tailored interface around it.
We have done such projects to replace DDC® MiniACE® components, Aeroflex components as well as proprietary components.
The advantages of using a FPGA based design are clear, and include:
- low price (cheaper than the replaced device),
- quick design (usually less than 3-4 months),
- low NRE cost (in most cases we don't charge NRE at all),
- flexibility (design can be modified even after manufacturing),
- long term availability (FPGAs will continue to exist for long time).
A proper design can fit into any FPGA now and in the future, so that in case the selected FPGA is obsolete, the same design would fit into the next generation of FPGAs.
